The Parish Council is very pleased to learn that the independent Planning Inspectorate has dismissed an appeal by the developers Redrow for detailed plans to build 89 homes to the rear of Meadow Way.
Unfortunately Redrow are still allowed to develop the site, as planning consent for that was granted in December 2023 - but they now cannot proceed with the development until they get permission on detailed matters such as the design and location of the individual houses, meaning that they now have to go back to the drawing board and submit new plans to Arun.
The Parish Council attended the two day appeal hearing in Littlehampton, as did a number of local residents. Among other points, we argued that the affordable housing for the site should not all be clustered in the same place; we also objected to plans for a large block of flats at the entrance to the development.
The Planning Inspector's judgement shares our concern about the clustering of the affordable homes, and says they must instead be distributed throughout the site. It also says that the proposed flats building 'would appear as a bland and unimaginative over-sized block lacking in showing any meaningful relationship to its surrounds'.
We will carefully scrutinise any further plans the developers put forward, and will continue to work with residents to ensure any future application for the site is more appropriate to the location.
